Subject: Non-Hoops Note: Gilligan out as UVM Hockey Coach

For all you college hockey fans out there (and I know there's a few of you), it was announced today that Mike Gilligan has retired as UVM Hockey coach after 19 years. He will stay on with the university as the Men's Golf coach and Assistant AD in charge of Special Projects (read: throwin' him a bone). A search for a new coach will begin immediately.

As a fan, I am elated to finally hear this news. If you ask me, it's three years too late, but it's always better late than never. You know, sometimes the planets really do align: 1) UVM gets a new President who has an athletics mind set (Fogel), 2) UVM gets a new AD who seems committed to improving this program, and isn't just a UVM lifer (Corran), and 3) UVM gets a new coach for its premier attraction (anyone but Gilligan). Let the good times roll!

I'm happy for UVM fans that things finally seem to be changing for the better in Burlington. Let's hope that new leadership can bring Vermont athletics into the modern era.
