You hit it right on the head: dream season with a nightmare finish. That's baseball: the bats go cold for two games, and you're screwed no matter who you are. In hindsight, if I'm Currier, I start Dixon today over Miller...but one run won't beat Maine, and two runs in two days will get you exactly what the Cats have: 0-2 and a 4th place finish.

But, with that being said, it's still a time to look at the whole product, and thank the 4 seniors (Barry, Dixon, Merchant, and Robinson) for their efforts. I'm not a historian, but I wonder when the last time UVM had 3 Vermonters like Barry, Dixon, and Merchant in the same class that accomplished so much. Too bad a NCAA bid wasn't one of those things.

As for next year, the plus side is that they return 8 of their 9 field starters (Barry in CF being the only loss). Tewksbary, Chamberland, and Brault still make up a formidable line-up. Hopefully Jason Carey can hit a little more like his freshman year than his sophomore year. Jay Iannoni will be a key contributor. The bad news however will be the pitching staff: Only Derek Miller returns from their weekend starters. Justin Bissonette and Jared Slater both have weekend potential, but that still leaves a 4th starter and a bullpen to worry about. They'd better hope for some impact freshman arms to come in and contribute right away. Either way, whereas this team relied on the pitchers, next year's team will go only as far as the bats will take them.

I absolutely agree with you about Dixon. Not starting him may have been the worst coaching move Currier has made all year....unfortunately, it may have cost them bigtime. I questioned Maine's coach for not starting Collar last night vs. Stony Brook as MacDonald was only the #3 starter this season.

I would like to see Vermont continue to do well. America East is looking like a very solid baseball conference right now, especially considering our geography. Vermont might take a dip next season in the win column, but their offense should be nasty.

Was at the Vermont/Mane game today...what a huge dissappointment. Vermont bats went dead..just like last year. Some very questionable coaching decisions regarding pitching...Dixon should had been the starter today. Also starters coming in as relievers...all very strange.

As for next season, Vermont should be solid again. They will have 3 quality starters returning...2 of them hard throwing lefties. The combined record of these 3 was 12-7...not too shabby at all. Their offense returns all with the exception of Barry..who had a very average season at best. Next years concerns will mainly be with the bullpen..
