's message, "Niebling named coach at St. Michael's" on 20:24:40 04/28/03 Mon
First, congrats to Jen Niebling on her new position. She's a true home-grown Vermont success story, and hopefully the St. Mike's job will lead to even bigger and better things.
But, with all the stories circulating surrounding Cieplicki and Syracuse, I'm a bit concerned. The Burlington Free Press had a brief write up the other day, mentioning that 1) Cieplicki was the first candidate to interview for the 'Cuse job, and 2) that a few of Syracuse's more desirable candidates had already removed themselves from consideration. That's not good.
And yes, all the while, UVM still doesn't have an AD in place for next year, and Farnham is essentially a well-fed lame duck. If Cieplicki bolts, UVM is then coachless and ADless. Now, had Niebling stayed on the staff, you could have always pulled a stop-gap solution, and named Niebling interim head coach for 2003-04, and then let the new AD work this out next spring. But now, the solution is not so clear. It's tough anyway getting a head coach you want this late in the spring...and it's even tougher when the guy calling the shots is out the door on July 1st (not like Farnham wouldn't try to make a good decision...but ADs often like to put their own stamp on their departments).
Of course, if Cieplicki stays put, this is all moot. And while I certainly want Keith to achieve everything he can (another great VT success story), I'll be the first to admit that I hope he stays in Burlington for a long time. Jeez...when was the last time at UVM the future of the men's program was more sound than the future of the women's program?!

Hey GCG -- animal, 18:37:11 04/29/03 Tue
What the heck are they doing up there with the AD search? July 1st is like 2 months away and we have yet to hear about finalists or anything. You heard any possible candidates?

I wish I knew... -- Go Cats Go, 19:15:03 04/29/03 Tue
Unfortunately, like a lot of people here, I'm just a schmoe without any inside connections. I know what's told to me.
The last public mention of the search I saw was, I believe, March 30th in the Burlington Free Press. The synopsis was that they were pairing down applicants, and I'm fairly certain the projected date was "within two weeks" they'd have a list of finalists that would be brought in for on-campus interviews. If it wasn't two weeks, it was definitely the end of April.
Well, two weeks is long gone, and the end of April is tomorrow. If they've got a list of finalists, they haven't shared...not that I know of, anyway. Not that I want them to rush through the process and screw this up, but it does seem like they're dragging their feet...milking this extra year Farnham gave them for all it's worth.

Keith will be heading to NY state soon. I have no idea about possible replacements. I would have to guess Kelly cole from Boston College and Ginny doyle from Richmond(former Rhode Island Asst.).
Good luck,Keith!

BFP Updates Cieplicki, AD Search -- Go Cats Go, 13:09:42 04/30/03 Wed
First, in an update of the 'Cuse job search, yet another candidate has removed themselves from consideration (Joe McKeown from George Washington), so it would appear that Cieplicki is becoming more and more likely for this job, which could be announced any day now. Also, on a side note, it's reported that if Cieplick heads to Syracuse, his other assistant (Joe Luneau, formerly a Siena assistant) would be headed with him.
And, on the AD front, it's good news, bad news. Good news: They have two finalists! Bad news: They won't tell us who they are! Yes, they continue to be very secretive of the process, and keeping names under wraps. But, the process appears to be that both candidates will be on campus in the next week for meetings, interviews, and such...and according to a search committee member, "I would guess that by the end of next week, we'll have something to say." I hope he's right.

Versyp To Pitt -- SpunDoctor, 14:01:11 04/30/03 Wed
Word on the street Sharon Versyp of Maine is a finalist at Pitt. So two of the top programs in AE will be without coaches.
