Re: Coach K should be fired.... -- Van Lier, 10:59:46 04/07/03 Mon
A few things to ponder:
* Why is it that the Duke school newspaper reports that a Duke star (Redick) is reportedly caught smoking dope in his dorm room and it doesn't even make wire service reports and the talking head circuit? And don't give me the "innocent until proven guilty" stuff. That's never stopped the talk show brethren.
* The Times Picayune article mentions dubious jobs/financial deals for parents. It doesn't mention that when Trajan Langdon left Alaska for Duke, his father suddenly became a professor at the Durham, N.C. school?
* Whatever happened to Duke assistant coach Pete Gaudette? Remember when Coach K's back forced him to leave the team during the season five, six years ago? Gaudette filled in for him during the medical leave. His thanks? When Coach K came back, Gaudette was released from his duties and K proclaimed that any games Gaudette coached would not count against his career record, despite the fact he was still "officially" head coach. Wonder if K will reclaim those wins should he need them for a milestone later on?
As one particularly shrill voice for Duke basketball likes to say about his Blue Devil blinders: "What's not to like, baby. Duke is the best, baby. They do it the right way, baby."
Here's the story referenced in Bob Ryan's column:

I think Pete Gaudette left Duke, partially because (I think) he was the lead plaintiff in the class action lawsuit filed by a bunch of "restricted earnings" assistant coaches against the NCAA. The coaches won their lawsuit, and from what I remember reading Gaudette got a TON of money and promptly retired, since he was effectively blackballed.
I know some AE-level restricted earnings assistants got some nice six figure settlements, so one could imagine what an ACC restricted earnings coach would have gotten as part of the settlement.
