They announced this when he signed his LOI. Depth and conditioning would be my best guess. With Sorrentine returning and Alex Jensen becoming eligible, he probably would not get the minutes to warrant using a year of eligibility. In other words, they probably don't need him to accomplish their goals next season. Also, in a similar vein to Coppenrath, he could probably use a year of strength and conditioning training. I don't think he's, athletically-speaking, where he needs to be yet to be a contributor on a top-level AE team.

Of course, like all redshirt situations, it's all relative. If someone goes down with a season-ending injury early (please, not again), or if he steps on the court in October and totally exceeds expectations, I'm sure they'd play him. But, all that aside, he'll be in street clothes next year.
