I think that you have a pretty good understanding of the criteria now!!!! It's easy to recognize the problem now come up with a solution and it can't be Binghamton because they actually want to do it and do it right!!! Good Luck!!

I think that everyone's frustration with Binghamton as a host school is that it is going to make it VERY difficult for the true fans of the league to attend and support the tournament, and have a good all-around experience.

When you combine that with the paucity of extra-curricular activities in the Metropolitan Binghamton area, it makes the value proposition of attending a tournament in Binghamton lesser.

Since there are some of us (probably myself and Dane 96 included) that realize that Mr. Monasch is willing to sacrifice the pleasures of a few at the tournament to line the league's coffers.

How Binghamton did it is, admittedly, irrelevant, but those who saw the school in action at past tourneys have a valid claim as to why the alleged bid will be accepted by the AE.

I think the question we REALLY are debating here is the following:

Who is the tournament location relevant for:

The players? No, I think that they'd play the tournament in a YMCA gym in White River Junction if it decided who got to go to the Big Dance.

The coaches? No, I don't think they care where they'd play to some degree, as long as the location doesn't give one school a decided home court advantage (see Delaware) but EVERYONE would like to be either at home or closer to home.

The AD's? Probably not, they go to the tournament wherever it is.

The League Presidents? Come on, give me a break. Tricky Dick Freeland was at like one game when the tourney was at NU, and I don't know if Silber or any BU designee went to WBA this year.

So, in my opinion, the tournament location is important to two stakeholders:

1. The League. Mr. Monasch and Co. have made it clear they want a centralized tournament to be an EVENT, to promote all that is best and good about the AE. Don't get me wrong, he also has made it clear that he wants the tournament to be a money-making venture for the league. He also wants the tourney to be visible, hence the games on TV.

2. The Fans. Without the fans, the games may just very well be played in a random location. No, there aren't thousands of us who go to these games, and no, many league teams don't travel well or draw well. Would a tournament in Hartford, or Albany, or Portland bring more people together, I'm not 100% sold that MORE people would show up than would for a regular game.

So, the struggle for the league comes down to whose interests are best served by a centralized tournament at a member institution, and I think that in this case money wins out. The fact that we have a member institution that has been very visible and outspoken about wanting to host, is probably good for the league, short term.

Will Binghamton do a good job? As mentioned before, with all of the effort they've exerted to get the damn thing, I'm sure they will. Does this mean it should be their "birthright" to be the perpetual host or host for a noticeable window of time, no, I don't think so.

Long term, a tournament situated in Binghamton isn't the right answer for the league, for all of the reasons that long-term Delaware wasn't the answer for the "Old AE." I'd be all for rotating it every 2-3 years. No economies are gained by having a school host the tourney just for one year.

LOL..actually Whiter River Junction is quite nice. Just got in a car accident up there last Wed and had to spend the night. Because of its proximity to Dartmouth, they have a ton of bars, restaruants, attractions, and hotels. Actually would be a nice place for a tournament!!! Better than Central NY on a snowy winter weekend.

:)

I have no desire to drag this out forever, but who is correct, here?
Is Mr Monasch taking some undeserved heat? (see above and the like) or is it the AD's who pick the site from among all bids THEY submitted?
