Subject: CONGRATS UNH!!!

For all those hockey fans out there, I watched an unbelievable game today....UNH-CORNELL.

The UNH goalie completely saved the season for UNH after a goal was disallowed against him in the waning moments. He even took one of the mug, old school hockey style!!!

So, UNH is one game away from the national title...they play defending champ MINNESOTTA.

It's hard enough to get basketball attention in Durham, but a National Championship would be a reward for coaches, players and fans. It would bring pride and recognition not only to the University, but to the state as a whole. Good Luck Wildcats.

While I'm a basketball guy and lord knows having to compete against hockey in Durham is overwhelming, I still enjoy college hockey as well. The Hockey East and NCAA playoffs are similar to the basketball version -- very exciting and played before very large crowds. Another factor to add to all those that NHHoops lists, is the competition with the "big boys". If it wasn't Minnesota tonight, it would have been Michigan who the Gophers beat in their semi-final. While there are many D-3 schools playing D-1 hockey there are also the Big Ten schools (Wisconsin, Michigan State and Ohio State too) as well as Notre Dame.

In addition to his save off the noggin on the point blank shot, Ayers appeared injured after making a save during the 2nd period. The announcers were yakking about a pulled hamstring or wrist injury. During interviews after the game, he acknowledged that he got hit in the "cojones" making the save! Talk about "old school hockey" and sacrificing your body!!! Wish I heard THAT interview live!!

Minnesota is trying for the first back-to-back championships since BU in the early 70's. UNH goes for its first ever national championship in hockey. Sold out NHL arena in Buffalo (around 19K). I don't care if it is a niche/regional sport, it means as much to the State of NH and UNH as winning the Final Four (men's or women's) does here in CT. The adrenaline is already starting to flow!!

Catch the action tonight on ESPN at 7:00 EDT.

I wish I could be in Durham tonight... should be wild whether they win or lose! I was on campus when they went to the finals in 1999 against Maine and that was a great time. Everybody out on the street and all the news stations in the bars.

I will try to catch some of the game tonight and celebrate in Boston if we win this one. Although I must admit I'm not a hockey guy at all.
