Cloud watches the interaction between Gabe and Lian carefully. For all his bluster and impetuousness, the young man means well, and he's often more perceptive than others give him credit for. Sometimes, anyway; sometimes he's also dense as a brick. But one would have to be blind to not notice the signs between the two, and he remembers the conversation at the restaurant.
Well, nothing's in their way now, Cloud grumbles mentally. Why don't they just do something and get it over with? It'd save all of us a lot of trouble. That's a gross oversimplification of the matter, of course, and at some level, Cloud does realize that. But Lian's trying to get her mind off that now--that much he can tell--and the least he can do is oblige her.
"He's like that most of the time, actually," Cloud says with a resigned sort of half-sigh, sitting down on the bed Vincent just vacated. "Been like that since we first met." He half-smiles at the memory of the coffin flipping open in the empty, dusty crypt, and at Tifa's shriek and Red XIII's warning growl. They'd expected some sort of horrible, undead monster down there. What they got was quite different (and yet, not so far from what they had expected)--a definitely still-living man, haunted by nightmares and memories of sins they knew nothing about. But they respected his silence, though probably none of them could have learned anything had they tried.
And there was a hidden cave behind a waterfall, and the spectre of a young woman (had she been alive or dead or caught in between?). Half-recognized images, ghosts of the past, Hojo and Gast and her, Jenova and Sephiroth and Ifalna and Aeris. And then the woman had vanished and all they found was the gun and a splintered shard of materia like a glaring red eye that vanished when Vincent touched it. (and Cloud almost saw wings unfolding from Vincent's back as he shuddered, unfurling with a whisper of Chaos)
"There's a lot about him that we don't know or understand," Cloud goes on, looking at the ceiling. He doesn't understand all that Lucrecia showed them, in that sparkling cave behind the waterfall, reachable only by chocobo or submarine. But he understands more than he thinks he does. Probably even more than Vincent thinks he does, for Cloud is smarter than most people give him credit for. "It's probably not my place to tell you what I do know. They're his secrets to keep and give away." He turns his head to look at Lian, and then at Gabe. "But I do know that it's about a woman, and about things that should have happened but didn't, and things that did happen but shouldn't."
It is a remarkably accurate statement.
