Irvine calmly continues his coffee, thinking of a distant day long ago when he was sitting in the grass beneath a tree, trying to forget that he'd been told that he was going to have to save the world. And, his memory informed him, he was also watching a butterfly which had taken an interest in his hand.

My soul for yours, he wished at it. But butterflies are fickle creatures, he later decided, and he was glad it declined his offer. He never would have met his family (though they had forgotten that is who they were) again if he had spent out the rest of his days among the flowers.

And now he was being asked to save the world again? Not even his world this time, but a world entirely different than his own? He was very tempted to simply say "No thank you." and leave.

Instead, "Grave matter, huh? Speak away, then."
