Another factor which many people do not take into account was the introduction of the CD.

As you would be aware, many artists from all over the world had their music re-released, thus, more sales and therefore more revenue to them.

Plus, as you say, the wonderful Box Sets that emanated from people like Bear Family and Charley.

Wonderful material.

Although I must admit I am one of those people who think the CD never did sound like the original vinyl, the CD had one major advantage, all tracks ran concurrently on the one side.

The CD player in a car nowadays is taken for granted but back then it was a novelty to us all.
