The year was 1954 and an Englishman recorded a song which went to Number One in his home country and in the Top Ten in the US.

Somebody in my family used to love this man singing but I cannot recall who? The singers name was David Whitfield.

However, moving on:

David Blatt became the second lead singer for the group known as Jay & The Americans.

He replaced a man named John ‘Jay' Traynor who left because he did not want to sing ‘pop’ songs.

Mr Blatt changed his name to 'Jay Black' to fit in with the image of the group.

They recorded many hits songs and I am not sure but I think I saw them in Clear Lake, Iowa on one of my trips?

I am afraid the old memory boxes are not as good as they once were.

Meanwhile, Mr Black started to promote and call himself ‘The Voice’.

Modest little bastard wasn’t he?

Here is one of their biggest songs.

In 2006, Black completed bankruptcy proceedings in Manhattan, after he accrued a $US500,000 debt in back taxes to the IRS as a result of his gambling addiction.

The IRS initially sought to force him to sell the rights to perform as "Jay Black" as well as the trademark for "Jay and the Americans" in order to satisfy his debt to the IRS.

Black did, however, win a partial victory in the case, which granted him the right to continue to use the name "Jay Black", but he was required to sell the rights to perform as "Jay and the Americans”.

The trademark to "Jay and the Americans" was purchased by former members of "Jay and the Americans”.

He can no longer perform as "Jay Black and the Americans" and now performs as "Jay Black - The Voice”.
