Hello Mark

Ever the contrarian that I am, I would like to consider the case for your son's defence on this one.

Firstly, there is nothing wrong with skimming stones per se. Only a matter of days ago, I was sitting and watching my husband showing my grandson and granddaughter how to skim.

Of course, it must be done safely. I can't tell from the description if the girl and her mother were twenty yards away to the side, so your son was throwing the pebbles at a 90 degree angle away from them, or they were out in the water far enough to narrow that angle somewhat. If out far enough to narrow that angle, then yes, your son was careless and thoroughly deserved to have his bare bottom soundly tanned.

However, if it is the first scenario then I would consider it so unlikely that the stone would be released at that angle with enough force to travel 20 yards to the side as to be unforseeable by your son. An extremely unfortunate accident, but a true accident all the same and I would probably not spank had it been a matter for me.

Your son also had excellent mitigation. It was very decent of him to go over. It was also very honest of him to give the correct number, rather than just giving any old number and making a sharp exit. I would have taken that into account when administering whatever spanking was due.
