Kate, I do hope you had a lovely holiday in Wales. I have walked a good few stretches of the coastal path over the years, so am very fond of Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire coastline.

You so have an analytical bent, which chimes with my own approach to problems. I do appreciate you standing up for my son. As I have just said to Mama, I did feel slightly guilty for spanking the boy for this.

He told me 20 yards, but it may have been less, or may have been more. It is a shallow gently dipping beach, so to swim you have to be some way out. Therefore, the stone left did not have to leave his hand at a sharp angle to strike someone.

I have no issue with skimming stones whatsoever - and have done so myself many a time. But accidents do happen, Kate, so for goodness sake, do so some distance from bathers. Surely common sense dictates that?

Yes, I am reassured my son showed genuine remorse for his actions and quickly apologised to the mother and child. That said, it was reckless and stupid what he did, and there was no thought for the safety of others.

We will have to agree to disagree on the validity of the spanking I gave him.
