Some more thoughts Alfred,
I have tried to post some links to digital scans of old (over 100 years) newspaper articles on the topic, but I think perhaps these aren't allowed (and I am sorry Mary if this was the case) so the posts were removed. However the articles were very interesting primarily because they were pro-spanking, but also mentioned some societal aversion to spanking at the time, some calling it out-dated. Being over 100 years ago, it leads me to wonder if there are "on-again, off-again" phases in how society views spanking.

The articles I tried to share made it was clear that the writers were "no-nonsense" parents. At the same time, it seemed clear they loved their kids, and wanted to guide them by correcting unacceptable behaviors. They described spanking in detail, including baring the buttocks, "over the knee/lap," using a slipper, paddle, or (most commonly, a hairbrush). The articles described spankings being a series of "blows" and left no doubt that the parents intended for spanking to make an impression.
In doing so, spankings CAN teach, and provide a sense of discipline so the child will be more aware of their own behavioral choices. Bluntly, it was clear that those parents (now long gone) believed in a good, memorable sting, and spanking just long enough to drive the memory home so it would indeed be remembered (to me this is the key to effective discipline).

From my own perspective, I was subject to childhood spankings throughout most of the 1980's, as was my husband. We were spanked soundly, but I feel reasonably (and as we learned, very similarly), by parents who were also spanked, similarly, in the 1950s and 1960's. Many other posters here describe spanking boys. I have girls, and they were mostly wonderfully behaved. However, when saying "mostly" I have to admit, they were not always made of sugar, spice, and all things nice. When their behavior did stray, we always tried (with varied results) other forms of discipline. But when the misbehavior was serious, spanking was the "go-to" method in our home.

I believe if it is carefully practiced, with love (though they may not sense it in the moment), careful verbal feedback, and time for them to reflect, the brief and very memorable sting of a spanking can be important for discipline.
