Kalya first turned to her blue flit Caer, making sure her eyes contacted with his. "Go up to the rafters, Caer. This isn't a time for your antics." Caer chirped understandingly and flew up to perch. Kalya took her pair of the tough wherhide gear, and paused to put the jacket on before turning to Layath for approval.
Well? Do I look like a dragonrider?
You look like my rider and nobody else's. Is that the same?
I wouldn't have it another way, Layath dear, Kalya said, fingering the wherhide gently, accustoming herself to the slightly rough feel.
I hope it doesn't feel rough on my hide.
I doubt it, dear heart, if we put it on right.
Kalya grabbed a pair of riding straps from the proffered pile, and held it up. "Oiling once a week, eh? I can do that," she murmured, while looking at the straps to get them in the right direction. Kalya hefted them up and slipped them onto the are around Layath's neck, getting them settled and buckling them.
Too loose.
I know. I'm just sizing them out, Kalya muttered, trying some loose, some tight, seeing the telltale signs you could look for to tell if it was one or another. After about half a minute of this, Layath looked up.
Done?
Kalya tightened the strap a tad, and turned her gaze upward. Done.
I'm glad you're stopping here. It feels right.
Kalya smiled, glad she had managed this first step of dragon care right, for she had been wondering about her capabilities to be a good rider to Layath in this aspect.
"Alright, Lay, bend-" but she smiled, as Layath had already done so. Kalya gripped Layath's back and hoisted herself up onto her dragon, settling herself.
Hmm, almost same position for riding a runnerbeast, she thought.
I am much better than a runnerbeast, though, right?
Lay, darling, there is no comparison, Kalya reassured her dragon while tightening her straps, testing her movement range quickly to see if it was fine, she pushed a helmet onto her head (we do have helmets, right?), turning to D'tir and Kuvoth.
"I'm ready!"
