I did one week of CRC at age 12 six years ago and was traumatized. I got my first period while there and wanted to call my mom but was not allowed to. I was a young girl that was scared and they kept insisting they couldn’t make exceptions for phone calls to home. Honestly, I can’t understand why it is against the rules to call home. The camp owners just don’t want the inconvenience of doing it in my opinion. I understand not wanting kids to be on their phones all day when they should be experiencing camp, but I feel it is very unsafe to put your child in an environment where the only people they can turn to if they feel uncomfortable or unsafe are people they have never met before and are complete strangers. I also felt that you were treated less than if you weren’t a World Qualifier. I was in Open at the time and upon meeting some instructors, they would immediately ask who was and was not a WQ and it was clear who they were interested in after that. I would say that that was about half of the instructors there.
