First off, congratulations to this winning team! I’m sure you worked hard and you should be celebrated. Bravo!

Second, thank you to Maureen for shutting down the haters with the facts, but I’m sorry you even had to do that in response to this person’s post.

Third, please know the OP’s post is not the sentiment of all adults. I am an adult dancer and began competing in the adult category when I was the same age as these dancers being unfairly criticized. Now, in my late 30s, I understand what it is like dancing against someone who is better/younger/more fit than I am, but until age groups are expanded (U30, U40, O40) those are the dancers who push me to work harder. I might never take home an Oireachtas podium placement, but I do take home inspiration from the amazing, talented dancers with whom I get to share the stage.

As adult competitors, we should be setting the example and be building each other up, no matter the age of the adults competing with us. It is not the fault of this team that the age span is so vast in adults. None of us are getting any younger, and without charges to age groups, in 10 years the ladies you are singling out may compete against a new group of adults a decade younger than them. That’s just life.

Irish dance in the adult community has brought so much joy and so many wonderful people into my life. I hope you are someday able to find all that it offers, knowing a single placement on a single day is so minor in the grand scheme of things.

Shout out to the adult 20-somethings and the 50-somethings and everyone beyond and in between. Keep doing what you love and sharing it with the world.
