<geek mode=rant>
For my day job, I just spent the better part of a day pounding on an issue that effected less than 1% of our audience. Unfortunately, it also effected the vast majority of engineers here.

Basically, Netscape 4.x cannot properly handle multiple processes correctly, yet insists on using them. The result is that random characters can be inserted into the input buffers. Not a big issue for things like pictures and sounds, since most of these can handle things like that, but a real pain in the ass when you're including javascript.

Please, Save your sanity and keep yourself from looking like an idiot when you flame the page author, Stop Using Netscape 4.x.

Granted, Mozilla is insanely slow (although now I know why it's named after a large lizard) on most boxes, and Opera is only available for select versions and distributions, which pretty much leaves you with, well, something else.

Actually, (and I'm sure folks will love me for this) Unix pretty much sucks as a desktop. Don't get me wrong, Unix excells as a server, but for day-to-day use, the GUIs and window managers just blow cheap grits.

Why is that?

Well, pretty much for the same reasons that Microsoft blows as a server. Microsoft was initially designed as a desktop with heavy user input. Unix was designed as a pipe process machine with little user input.

Unfortunately, layering on a complex application system to attempt to change this fundemental architecture doesn't work, in either case.

At work I develop in Unix and use NT as my interface. So, basically, I've got 15 to 20 terminals open on my screen at any given point. I also run MSIE, Opera, Mozilla, Netscape 4.* and 6, all within Windows. I seldom have problems performing any task I've needed, and if I do, it takes me about 10 seconds longer.

If you don't like Windows, fine. Get a Mac. It works just as well, provided you're accustomed to it.

If you feel that There Can Only Be One system, however, I encourage you to at least reconsider.

I applaud the evil genius who thought Microsoft would be a good server, BUT...Sister Inez00:31:59 06/05/02 Wed
