Subject: Loyola v Siena

A couple of thoughts:

1) I understand Lanier's frustration after having such a big lead to Fairfield and losing.

2) There has been marginal improvement against the press since Providence but not nearly enough.

3) If the previous practices stressed beating the pressure and a strategy on how to beat the pressure, the team would have played better in addressing the pressure. Summary: There has been a lack of tactical progress in developing a strategy to beat the press during regular practices. If this issue isn’t addressed in normal practices instituting post game practices is futile and may actually backfire.

4) Siena's difficulty with the press is not an issue of talent--Siena has a ton of talent.

5) The issue of PG is very real to Siena's overall rhythm of play and beating the press. However, while bringing up the ball is a key component the another important ingredient in breaking the press is with away-from-the-ball front court movement (thus creating open passing lanes for the man bring the ball up). This is a tactical issue and needs to be perfected in practice.

6) It is easy to become fixated on the man bringing the ball up--however, watch the big men tonight in the forecourt and see if they are moving without the ball, creating "outs" for the ball handler. Absent of this it doesn't matter who brings the ball up, there will be problems at half court and turnovers. If the big men are mobile Siena will beat the press handily.

Tonight will be a challenging game for the Saints. You should win but that is expected. A win is not enough; Siena must recapture it's momentum and it's rhythm to regain its overall balance as a team.

Siena played so poorly and uncharacteristically in parts of Monday's game that another response might have been to just try and forget it. Siena won't play a half that bad again this year.

Prediction:
Siena 76
Loyola 64
