The players who compete in AAU ball get recognized. Beers, Van Schaik, Dolan, et al. all got recognition doing that. Ditto for the junior from Syracuse who is a stud. He has gotten plenty of recognition on the AAU circuit. If these kids compete for one of these teams, like the Albany City Rocks, they will be recogized. Ditto for kids in Buffalo and in Rochester. All three kids from McQuaid Jesuit were well-known quantities over the summer, and a number of programs, like Pittsburgh and Providence, recruit Buffalo.

If players don't play AAU ball, there is a higher probability they will be hidden. But rest assured that a guy like Tom Konchalski knows them, and knows them well. A kid like Dave Ryan slipped under the radar living ten minutes away from New York City. Konchalski knew him well, however.
