Three star recruits, or a prospect that someone thinks is a "three-star recruit"(I take Hoop Scoop's rankings with a grain of salt, as I do almost all of these rankings) can be perfectly legitimate and go to the MAAC. Think about a kid like Ricky Soliver, who probably could have gone higher had he been qualified. He had gotten some sniffs from St. John's and Louisville, but didn't have the test score. He winds up at Iona. Other times, a school could legitimately beat out a higher level school for a recruit, which happens, or because of some perceived flaw, like lack of size, quickness, or lack of exposure, they fall to a MAAC school. Look at Keydren Clark. He played in one of the top high school programs in the country alongside five or six Division I prospects. The exposure was there. Schools didn't want to bite. Contrary to popular belief, the only schools that really had offers on the table for Clark were St. Peter's, Drexel, and Howard. Not exactly a knockout list. Based on how he's performed this year, I don't think anyone would have rated him less than a three or a four. I wonder what he was rated coming out.

You also have situations where mid-majors identify a kid early, recruit him hard, and sign him early. This happens fairly often. That's what happened with Iona and Justin Marshall. If a kid like that waits, he may get higher level offers.

There are a lot of different variables that go into it. I wouldn't get hung up on particular rankings, however.
