I often like to bring up Siena when chatting hoops with people out here, but it is often a good way to make sure you bore the person you are talking to. I was able to sell one guy on Siena last year, though, a co-worker who is a lifelong basketball addict (still plays at 40+). He really liked Siena, the way they played, the crowd, and Lanier - he watched the MAAC final. He has a kid who plays and says he would like to learn more about the program.

You are probably right about many of the D-II and D-III football programs, but then again there seem to always be some making the switch - of course I could be getting confused with the club-to-AA programs like Siena. Wasn't UAlbany a D-III to I-AA switch? As far as the traditions are concerned, I suspect you are talking about the Unions, RPIs, UChicagos, WashU's, etc. who also have affiliation interests with other schools who value the athletic programs but treat them as extensions of the student life, not neon signs for the schools.
