I just want to add that exciting developments to date for the future of technology infrastracture development which will immensely facilitate information transfer and educational processes are in the works. PANGTEL has just concluded an agreement for a new US company called Teledesic as your will note from Fridays news on the National Online below.

At this stage, Teledesic is looking at launching 288 low earth orbit satellites circling the globe from south to north and north to south while the the earth rotates west to east. A prototype was launched recently an communications are being tested on this. The actual satellites will be launched beginning in 2002 while service to PNG will begin hopefully in 2004.

This will enable electronic communications (computer, internet, www, TV, etc.) possible for the remotest parts of PNG and you don't need to have large numbers to achieve economies of scale for this facility to be installed in the remotes locations of the country.

Library services of the world will be possible to view in the deep jungle schools of the country if power sources can be made available.

If you want to learn more about the technological developments in the works on this, you can visit the Teledesic webpage at

US company to provide fixed satellite services

PORT MORESBY: A major US-based telecommunication company has
been granted a licence by the Papua New Guinea Telecommunication
Authority (Pangtel) to provide domestic and international fixed satellite
services in PNG, starting from 2004.

The licence has been granted to Teledesic Corporation in which Microsoft
Corporation chairman Bill Gates is a major stockholder, Pangtel board
chairman Les Gavara-Nou said in statement here yesterday.

Mr Gavara-Nou said that through an authorised carrier like Telikom PNG
Ltd, the Teledesic system would provide PNG with access to services that
are increasingly necessary for economic development such as Internet
access, digital videoconferencing, interactive multimedia, and real-time,
two-way, high-speed digital data transmissions.

"Teledesic also possess the requisite technical capacity and business
experience to serve the PNG market. Additionally, the opportunity for PNG
to have access to this new technology, and the expected contributions to the
building of a modern national telecommunications infrastructure are key
considerations in granting this licence," he said.

He said Teledesic is well qualified in its corporate and financial capacities
to provide services in PNG.

Mr Gavara-Nanu said with their global coverage and small terminals, the
Teledesic Network offers a way to augment the services of existing
communications service providers and to create instant communications
infrastructure where low user density, rugged terrain, or other factors could
make other alternatives impracticable.

Teledesic's regional director for Asia-Pacific, Paul Cooper, said Teledesic
was delighted to receive the licence and spectrum allocation from Pangtel
to operate a satellite system to provide domestic and international fixed
satellite services in PNG.

Mr Cooper said the Teledesic network is a high-capacity broadband
satellite service that combines the global coverage and low latency of a
low earth orbit (LEO) constellation of satellites with the flexibility of the
Internet and fibre-like transmission quality.

"It will offer all the people of PNG affordable access to high speed
interactive broadband communications on a global basis independent of
their geographical locality, and bring enormous socio-economic benefits to
all," he said.

He said that by granting Teledesic this licence, Pangtel and the Government
had shown great foresight and leadership in bringing this exciting new
technology to the people.

Other major Teledesic stockholders are aircraft manufacturer Boeing, and
Craig O McCaw. The latter led the development of McCaw Cellular
Communications Incorporated, which was the largest cellular provider in
the US in 1994 when it was sold to AT&T, the world's second largest
telecommunications company and software publisher, for a reported
US$11.5 billion (K32.8 million).
