Yes, I can remember that.... no Pidgin and "language". Many of us in boarding schools felt home sick just being deprived of communication in our own mother tongue.

Trying to speak English was a headache and embarrassing experience. No wonder we never felt good about ourselves and would suffer throughout the day even when we had a headache. Had we been allowed to communicate in Tokpisin, I guess we would have had the courage and confidence to speak our minds and tell about our sickness.

So what should be done about English and Tokpisin in school (high school)? Learn English because it is a foreign language. Speak English in class because it is part of the formal learning environment. In the non-formal environment outside the classromm, speak Tokpisin because you will be able to verbally communicate better in it.

Am I stating the obvious? Recent high school students, toksave.
