Subject: Pretty good news from Gallup

Smoking went slightly up in the U.S according to the Gallup Poll from a record low of 15% in 2019 to 16% today. I realize that's not much of a rise and in fact is in the margin of error so statically no change at all. But if you focus too much on that you don't have an appreciation for how rare this is. Gallup has shown consistent declines over the decades, sometimes sharp annual declines. So any type of stabilization is a blessing. I say count your blessings, we are not in free fall and could in face be at rock bottom.

Other good news from Gallup is that vaping is down 2 points from the 2019 peak, from 8% to 6%. While slightly more young adults aged 18-29 vape than smoke (17% vs 14%) smoking absolutely dominates over vaping among those 30+. In fact the 20% smoking rate among those aged 30-64 is really not that terribly bad.

Yet more good news. The % of smokers who smoke less than a pack a day has declined from a record 74% in 2019 to 67% today. This means there are more "hardcore smokers" among the remaining smoking population.

Finally 28% of those in both the lowest income and education groups are smokers (compared to 12% or less among higher groups). While we have known about that pattern for a long time I find that 28% quite a high, reassuring number. If you get in with a low income/education group there will be smokers to socialize with.
