Was anyone else like me who just could not behave in church?

My church had a weird situation where I still attended the main service, but then went to the Sunday school classes and I just could not sit still, not matter what my parents would tell me. They brought little activities if I got bored, but I still loved trying to roam around and find other kids to try and rope into my troublesome behavior.

It never worked, but I still would push my luck a bit. 5-7 was prime time for that. You can imagine how many time my little self was carried out into some empty room on the second floor or out to the car to have my bottom spanked.

8-12 or so was more discreet. I would write in the bibles or change words to the songs that were inappropriate. My parents tried to reason with me more, and though it was less often, you bet I still found myself over my mom or dad's knee once we got home.

I can't be the only one, right? Worst one had to be when I was 12 or 13 and I made a habit of repeating "hail Satan" instead of "Amen". My friends down the pews thought it hilarious. My parents not so much. I wasn't even reprimanded in church. They let me dig my own grave.

I was told in the car to go directly to my room and wait. That was the time my dad used the full force of a wooden hairbrush on me. Probably the worst spanking I ever got.

I was not raised in a religious household so I don’t have many church experiences, but there was one…

I was young, maybe 5 or 6, and was staying with my grandmother. She took me to church and it just so happened that on this particular Sunday they were doing communion. I was not at all familiar with the concept and I thought they were just passing out free little snacks. Grandma told me I wasn’t allowed to have any, which I thought was complete nonsense and when the plate came around I grabbed the bread and quickly stuffed it in my mouth.

She was HOT and when we got back to her house she throughly beat my butt. Normally my grandma was a great woman but I still think it was unfair of her for not providing a context for WHY I wasn’t allowed to have the free bread. As a matter of fact, I still don’t know 100%…I guess it was because I was not baptized?

She is gone now, so I’ll never know.
