Growing up, as long as we thought we had committed a punishable offense we were expected to automatically be in position over the back of a chair or bent over a desk with our bottom bared waiting quietly. If we were lucky we were told we could get up after some time, but the ambiguity of not knowing whether a caning was in store was a powerful deterrent!
