The Macs with built-in IDE, IIRC, do not provide SCSI termination power. That might be part of the problem, but check the TIL Archive to be sure about that, since I don't remember if that's accurate or not. I know the Plus doesn't, and I know PowerBooks generally don't, and I *think* IDE-based Macs also lack it, but I'm not positive.
