Subject: CC Got Me Stumped

Greetings all,

Bought a Color Classic at a swap meet for $10. Owner doesn't know what's wrong with it, or if it even will light up. My goal is make it a Mystic.

Take it home and find that the CC lights up but shows the flashing ?. No sound from the hard drive, ie not spinning up. OK, so I try to boot off an external HD. It works! Internal HD is not seen by SCSI Probe, or any HD setup software. It's as if the HD isn't there. I checked the +5 and +12 VDC supplies to the HD and both are good. Everything else seems OK with the CC. Also boots up fine from a OS 7.1 "Emergency" floppy. Replacing the internal HD with the one I had in the external box gives me the same ? result. Somehow the CC just doesn't see an internal HD. I suspect the HD ribbon cable or the CC logic board. Since an external HD works fine, my guess is that the SCSI chip on the logic board is OK.
I open it up and look for signs of any problems. After disassembling most of the easily unplugable things, I can't find anything obvious so I put it all back together again. More trouble. Now it won't boot up at all. Instead, I get a message saying

"Sorry, a system error occurred. "System"
unimplemented trap
To temporarly turn off extensions, restart and hold down the shift key."

Restarting with extensions Off has no effect. (I get the same message again.) Won't behave any different with internal HD, external HD or floppy.

Meanwhile, I located a LC575 logic board on eBay, figuring the CC logic board may be the problem. I download the necessary extensions from the Mac512 site, and get a HD ready. The 575 board looks fine, but when I install it, I get the exact same results as my last attempt with the CC logic board-- the unimplemented trap message. HD still doesn't spin up.

So, I'm stuck. Now it seems to me that neither logic board is at fault. Any suggestions as to where to look next?

Thanks for any ideas.
Mike
