I'd prefer to keep this juice public domain...

The AC-0800 works just fine with the HLD0804 series. I know this from experience, and yes this controller will drive the LCD in both 640x480 (scaled to full screen) and 800x600. Yes, the AC-0800 has an internal 15-pin VGA ribbon cable connector (very handy)

And yes, there is a capacious amount of room inside the case when the tube and old analog board are removed. Sitting beside me is an LCD color classic with an incredible amount of stuff crammed inside, with room left over for a 4-disk SCSI array (which I've not yet decided whether I'm going to implement...the heat generated would be immense). This thing has internal floppy, slot load Pioneer DVD drive, 2 PCI 6500 board, G3, 6360 power supply, IBM 60-gig, secondary power supply (the 6360 supply alone wasn't nearly enough!), speakers, etc. And a full quadrant of the case is still empty.

Finding an HLD0804 is NOT easy. I'd recommend the Unipac LCD, as it's still in production and much easier to find. If you would rather go with the HLD0804, your best bet is to watch eBay for an older parted subnotebook. Just a few days ago an old Acer Travelmate 312t went for $100, which had an HLD0804 in it. Keep an eye out for old busted-

Metrobook subnotebooks (there's only 2 kinds- and one is obviously bigger than 8.4")

Acer Travelmate 31Xt series

Panasonic CF 31/32/33 series (not 35)

Some Hitachi Visionbook Traveller series

Or you could just go buy a new Unipac, which I believe is descended from Philips' purchase of Hosiden some years ago. Digital view sells a connection kit for the Unipac- very convenient.

Best of luck!
