How are they marked? A sticker? Printed lettering? Is it the same on both sides? Different?

How many chips are on each module, and what are the numbers printed on the chips?

1MB VRAM modules will not work in a 575. 1MB VRAM modules were never actually made for that slot. The highest-capacity chips made for the 68-pin VRAM slot(s) used in all pre-PCI Macs were 512K. 1MB VRAM modules are only available in a DIMM form factor, and only compatible with the 7200, 7500, and similar PCI-based Power Macs.

Your friend's Performa 5200 doesn't even have VRAM slots - its 1 MB of "VRAM" is actually a 1 MB chunk of system DRAM set aside for video purposes, like the video subsystem on the IIci and IIsi. Since this is the case, it'll be awfully hard for your friend to give you a 1MB VRAM module from the 5200 in the first place, let alone for you to get it to work in the 575 :)
