1. The CL26 mod is an alternative to the variable resistor tweak which is mentioned but advised against on the Japanese VGA site. Both can only be used after the main part of the VGA upgrade - the track cutting and bridging and the resistor moving.

2. The 5500 board is without doubt the best board for the PCC upgrade, albeit the most expensive! ;-)

3. The CC will work with the 640 x 480 conversion before you do the logic board upgrade; I strongly recommend such a two-stage approach.
