What helps to clarify is to understand WHAT you are doing at each stage, and WHY. ;-)

The 'pin 8' - 'pin 10' stuff alters a voltage in the video circuitry; always required.

The J78/J79 stuff OR the 'line to pin 20' stuff alters the sense wire output of the analogue board so that the logic board installed in the CC 'knows' that it's driving a 640 x 480 screen, not a 512 x 384 one. It's analogous to flicking switches on those switchable Apple-VGA monitor adaptors, and doing one or the other is required..

The CL26 capacitor mod is quite independent of the above, and stretches the display area horizontally, once the above procedures have been done.

If you try to understand what each stage does a little, then it becomes a lot clearer to see what variations are technically correct.
