I'm going to fill the gap with 2 curved pieces of beige metal screen - like the substance you often find covering computer speakers such as the old Apple AV monitor's. It shouldn't look too bad, and it will let the fan draw air through the front and over the PCI cards in the Magma board.

Fantastic idea about the hardware decoder- a solution for DVD playback had been vexing me for a few days. 'sides, what use is an empty PCI slot? :)
