Hey Liam, parents that cane at home almost always cane bare bottom.

The caning in Fanny and Alexander is one example, this is a theatre version of it:



These seem to be parental canings:



When caning was the standard punishment in schools in the UK and some other countries, it was usually done over pants. Or over pyjamas or underpants. A really big caning is still super effective even when it's not bare bottom.

A few headmasters were famous for always caning bare bottom. And some of these bare bottom canings were in front of the class.

Countries where the cane was used in schools also often used slipperings as a punishment as well, until the late 20th century. Especially for younger kids or from PE teachers. I think a lot of slipperings were probably done bare bottom. In locker rooms or showers or whatever.



Even longer ago, like in the 19th century, when schools used the birch for punishments, that was always bare bottom because it's not effective through pants. Same for judicial birchings of teens that still happened until the late 20th century in some places.



Some of the countries that still use canings in schools, like in Africa or south-east Asia, probably mostly give them over pants. But judicial canings are given on bare bottom.

A few private schools in the USA still give paddlings bare bottom.
