No way would I visit that cabin without a small portable gas electricity generator. Except maybe on a fishing expedition, a boat maybe. City kid. As to the wolf... >It was a sound like nothing I had ever heard in my >life! Any of you? Not a wolf. Only in movies and TV. However, coyotes are another story. Pronounced either kyo' tee or ky' oat, they are dog-sized and shaped predators with a wolf-like life style. Wile E. is, of course, the heavy in the Roadrunner cartoons. They abound in the mountains I go hiking in. Occasionally they will run out of territory in the hills and the lone animal will be forced into town. They prey on alley cats and stray dogs and, of course, people's pets whose owners are inconsiderate enough to let them roam free at night. They have never been known to attack humans so we are not unduly threatened, but there is always the chance of a rabid animal running amuck. Never-the-less, seeing one loping along the sidewalk usually makes me unduly fond of my bedroom, to which I repair immediately if on foot. In the wild they usually hunt in packs, like wolves. They communicate with each other with a howl sometimes referred to as the coyote's "song". Yip, yip, yowlllll. Walt Disney has a cartoon ("The Coyote's Lament") of a coyote pack singing around a gathering that is hilarious. The chorus in the background is providing a counterpoint of um yip-yip, um yip-yip. https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BMDU2NTFkZDAtYWE3OC00YjEzLWI1ZDItMzU0NjhkOWRjMDFmXkEyXkFqcGc@._V1_FMjpg_UX1000_.jpg That's on TV. Hearing it for real is not so amusing. We will sometimes hear a pack in the mountains, kind of pleasant so unlike a barking dog. However, the recent raging fires in the hills has reduced territory to the extent that packs are now showing up roaming the streets. A lone coyote will go after a cat or a beagle, but a German shepherd or Rottweiler is immune. A pack on the other hand will go after anything. Still haven't heard of humans being attacked but we'd be no match for a pack. When a pack of coyotes makes a kill they will go into a paroxysm of howling, maybe to alert straggling members that there is food available. Hearing that outside your bedroom window at night (packs usually hunt at night) is, I think, analogous to your hearing the wolf. Chilling! Especially because you know that somebody probably just lost their pet. Matilda stays inside at night until further notice! -Jerry [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
