 Haha yes it is strange, but I think that is some kind of weird grimace, not a smile.

This pic is one of the absolutely INTENSE super strict canings which might even be 19th century instead of 20th century. It's really not clear whether it's a parental caning or a school one.

The marks on the target area suggest that this is a REALLY HARD caning. Like of the sort that the boy is gonna have bruises for a month and won't be able to sit for a week.

Then again, maybe he talked back to Dad or the Headmaster? :o
