Date Posted: 18:52:09 03/16/26 Mon In a discussion forum about "things that were normal in U.S. schools in the 1970s", of course the subject of school paddlings came up. (Even though school paddlings still *are* normal in some parts of the USA). There were the usual comments about big paddles with holes in, paddles hanging on the walls in classrooms, paddlings in front of other kids, paddlings for trivial misbehaviour etc. And teachers washing students' mouths out with soap. One I found especially interesting was this: "It was the last day of 8th grade and one of our teachers let us just chat instead of pretend to learn anything. At some point, it was mentioned that the teacher had a paddle but he never used it. Someone suggested that we all get an end-of-school swat with it and he agreed. We all dutifully lined up and got our whack." Seems like kids just *want* sore bottoms! Imagine the scene of the entire class lining up and the teacher swatting them one by one. He must have thought it was very bizarre but also kinda fun.... This is in Japan, but the swats are the teacher's idea, not the kids' idea: ![]() [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
