Date Posted: 08:21:11 04/04/26 Sat The 1962 movie HMS Defiant is on "Talking Pictures TV" at 4:35pm today in the UK. It's probably also available on their streaming site. Starring Alec Guinness and Dirk Bogarde, the movie shows a midshipman aged about 12 receiving repeated fairly severe canings. He does some authentic yelping. I think there is also a whipping of an adult sailor. New York Times verdict on the movie: "does not make much psychological sense but has the rich and rosy luster of a blood-drenched seafaring romance. ... So, if you're for naval roistering, here is your cup of rum". I think one of the caning scenes is still also on YouTube. The actor playing the senior midshipman who gives the canings is Nigel Stock, who "is known for his supporting roles as a solidly reliable English soldier or bureaucrat in several war and historical film dramas" including The Dam Busters and The Great Escape. He also played Dr Watson in the BBC television adaptations of the Sherlock Holmes stories. ![]() [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
