I have a question about the caning scene in The Defiant. The young midshipman is caned over his regular sailor's trousers. Now then, I know nothing about what British sailors wore back then but if the costumes in the movie are authentic then the material looks substantial, equivalent to the denim my jeans are made of. Also, the trousers look pretty loose, even baggy. Given several authentic accounts of boys "kissing the gunner's daughter" on British warships it seems that they all got it on their bare bottoms. I find it hard to suspend my disbelief and accept that this midshipman got it over his loose trousers. Of course, the producers probably wouldn't have gotten away with a Joe the King quality scene, so we have to accept what we get, but I still wonder.
