I can’t recommend mouth soaping as a punishment. Commercially sold soaps these days are so full of chemicals you never know what will happen. If you must, I would go with an organic soap made by a local artisan. They sell those at the farmers markets in my city, and I imagine that is the same pretty much anywhere.

My mother used to punish me with mouth soaking for cursing. First, I would be taken to the bathroom, where I was made to remove my shirt. She would take a bar of Dial hand soap and work it into a rich lather in a washcloth. Before beginning, I would be reminded to not swallow, and then told to open wide.

She would run the washcloth all over my mouth for about two minutes. The suds got everywhere and of course, I would be bawling. Once my time was up I was allowed to bend over the sink and get the soap out with water, as best that I could.

Was it effective? I can honestly say yes. It’s been 25 years and I can still taste the soap. I definitely cleaned up my mouth after a soaping. I was never harmed by it, but that’s because I obeyed the rule about not swallowing. Some kids might swallow though, and it’s hard not to.
