You're not wrong. It was essentially a tree lot for the lumberyard. My family had been planting trees there for 110 years. That made the area quite wooded. And we couldn't really get a clear view of the bottom.

But we regularly played back there, and as a precaution most of our parents had given us whistles to wear around our necks. This way, if we ever got lost or in trouble, we had a way to call for help that we were always told would carry further than our voices did.

I don't know if that's actually true, we didn't have Google back then to check these things. But the system seemed to work.

(Mine was made of nickel and brass, and had my name engraved on it)

Generally, three short blows meant danger. We weren't really supposed to use that one unless we truly were in some trouble. For that day, we were using the single long and short blows for communication.

When Barbara got to the bottom, she gave a long blow, and we sent the first rider down. (One of us Blowing his whistle with a short blow to let her know to start the clock)

Once the rider was clear of the trail she would blow again, (long blow) then when ready we would send the next rider. (Giving a short blow for her to start the clock.)

When Roddy crashed, he blew the 3 short blows to let us know he was hurt. And not to send any more riders down the hill.

The rest of us came to his aid right away. He had a scrapped knee, and a hurt wrist. (His bike was pretty well banged up, too.

We all took him back to the lumberyard, because it had the nearest adults. (Leaving Half-Brother, behind with Vince, to watch over the bikes.)

They called his parents, who took him to him to the emergency room. His wrist was sprained and he was put in a hand brace for two months.
