Both my parents would give you 1-3 underhanded swats if you persistently misbehaved when our family was out in public. Back in the 50's and 60's many parents commonly did this and no one made a fuss about it.

Those swats hurt or didn't hurt, depending upon how much clothing you had on down there, and how quickly you could paste your free hand protectively across your bottom. Being swatted always hurt your feelings though.

Sometimes in a scolding tone immediately afterwards you'd here, "do you want a spanking?!"

Swats weren't considered "spankings" in our family. Being "spanked" mean you got turned over a parental knee for a thoroughly sound paddling leaving you a very sorry young lady. Those happened in private mostly, with rare exceptions.
