My Mother would ask questions not during every spanking but the madder she seemed to be when giving it, the more likely it was there'd be scolding during, punctuated with questions -

"Are you going to do as you're told?"
"Are you learning your lesson?"
"Am I going to hear you did/didn't do X again?"
"What are you going to do after we're through?"
"I better not hear X out of you again, understood?"

Of course heard how sore I'd be, wouldn't be able to sit when she's done etc, but it was hard to pay any attention to it and even hear her fully sometimes cause it was loud. Dad wasn't as likely to talk and even Mum wouldn't always.
