I don't remember any talking during the actual spankings I received. My mom pretty much got down to business. That's not to say that she never lectured. There were several times where she became upset about something I had done and basically went on an extended rant. I remember once she mad about me not cleaning my room, and she proceeded to spend at least 2 hours (I actually timed it) going around the house cleaning things while I had to trail after her and listen to how awful it was that I couldn't even keep things picked up. She wouldn't let me help clean and I didn't contribute to the conversation, except when she occasionally asked a question and I knew I had better just agree with her. Looking back, it seems pretty clear that she was going through a manic episode. Being berated for 2 hours straight was awful and made me feel terrible. I'm pretty sure there were a few comments like, "If I had done that, my mother would have beat my ass." I guess I was supposed to be grateful she wasn't spanking me, but honestly, a spanking would have much less painful overall. I suppose I'm lucky that she didn't spank me AND do the marathon lecture.
