1. The schools I attended did not use corporal punishment. I first attended a private school that banned it in 1995, just a year or two before I started there. Next I went to public school, where it was banned statewide. I did go to a private daycare where the lady who ran it would smack me on the back of my hand. I still remember her holding my hand down by the wrist on one of those Playskool desks and smacking it repeatedly.

2. I don’t remember ever getting a choice between two different punishment at schools. In elementary school punishment were more ad hoc and left up to teacher discretion. Common punishments were time out, being kept in from recess, writing lines, etc. By the time I got to high school teachers played no part in discipline and it was left entirely up to the administrators.

3. I would have chosen the detention. I would have found the prospect of bending over for a paddling too embarrassing. Besides, my parents had a rule where trouble at school meant a spanking at home. Why get two spankings when you could only get one? In my rebellious teenage years, I may have opted for a paddling with the intention of not crying or acting out in any way just to prove I was tough.
