Based on the information you provided, I will change my answer to I would have chosen the paddle over detention.

At my school, ISS did not result in zeroes on assignments. It consisted of sitting in a room and working on work packets provided to the teachers. I was an Office Aid in high school and one of my responsibilities was to deliver the work packets to the ISS room each morning. If ISS did not result in zeroes, I don’t think it would have been worth it.

One thing I find interesting is the length of time served in ISS. I have heard of 3 days being average, but at my school it was a minimum of two weeks. The next level up was Out of School Suspension (OSS) which was reserved for things like fighting and frequent flyers in ISS.

Your description of your school experiences is more with what I am familiar with. Over the years my parents would tell stories about school paddling, and I definitely got the impression that it was not nearly as formal as it is today. Any teacher could paddle for any reason with no need for a form or a witness.

My father was a teacher in the 1970s and 1980s and was a staunch advocate of corporal punishment in schools, on the basis of the children didn’t lose any instructional time. Thankfully, he had moved on from that career by the time I was born.
