The teacher I was referring to Mr. S., had my best friend Andy in his class the next year and Andy told me about the incident he had with that teacher. Andy had broken his right leg in an a fall out of a tree and had a full leg cast on and was having to walk with crutches. He had a note asking his teachers to be allowed to leave classes early or to not penalize him for being late to class. The teacher he had in the class before chose to not allow him to leave early. He came to class almost a minute late, and showed Mr. S. the note. He grabbed the note out of his hand and threw it in the trash. Then he got his paddle out of his desk, and dragged out into the hall calling the shop teacher out to witness. He had Andy lean over and place his hands on the wall and gave him ten hard licks with the paddle. Andy started bawling and almost fell in the floor. Mr. S. tried to make him stand up but he couldn't. He couldn't put any weight on his right leg at all. He had to be taken to the hospital where in addition to being beaten black and blue, the leg refractured. His leg had to be reset and a new cast put on. His parents were livid. They were prepared to file assault charges against the teacher and sue the school. The teacher was immediately fired. They the agreed to drop the criminal charges but demanded his certificate be pulled and he never be allowed to work around school children again. He was also sued for damages. The school also agreed to pay damages out of court.
I got spankings at school a few times but never a beating like that. It's because of the risk of having sadistic teachers like Mr. S. I oppose corporal punishment in school now.
