I had an eighth grade Social Studies teacher who had a well deserved reputation for contriving to paddle eighth grade boys, particularly, athletic eighth grade boys, for little or no reason.To my knowledge, he never paddled girls though he was certainly empowered to do so.

During my eighth grade year, I made several trips out into the hallway with Mr. L and his paddle that he liked to refer to as the “butt burner.” You could tell from his smug attitude that he enjoyed the whole ritual of announcing that you were to be paddled and dramatically flourishing the “butt burner” as he directed you out into the hallway. Once you were in the hallway, it was “bend over and put your hands on the wall” and then, he’d chuckle and say something like “You know Jack, you brought this on yourself.”

He always made sure to adjust your position so that your pants were pulled tight across your buttocks so that he could ‘see’ his target clearly. Once he was satisfied that you were positioned correctly, which always involved considerable “hands on” work, he would deliver three to five searing licks to your extended rump with the “butt burner.” The licks sounded like gunshots echoing down the hallway. They stung like sin and burned like hell.

Mr. L took a certain pathological pride in humiliating his victims. He plainly enjoyed returning you to the classroom red faced and crying. You might be an admired eighth grade athlete to your fellow students, but Mr. L specialized in exposing your inner crybaby. He once gave me three licks with the “butt burner” for having the hiccups. I hated the son of a bitch!
