I learned as a parent why they have at such an adverse reaction to that. I raised little Evan from the time he was 3, he was still in diapers even. That image of him as such a sweet and innocent baby has stuck in my mind ever since. So hearing from him say that word...

Even despite the fact that he was almost an adult, and it was rather normal for him to experiment with adult behavior at that point...

That word out of that mouth, It grated my nerves in a way that they had never been grated before. (Not even when Colin had used it years before.)

I chose not to punish him on that day for a few reasons. Certainly not the way that I had been punished by my parents anyway.

First: I felt that I was far too upset at that moment to punish him properly. I didn't like dishing it out when I was upset. I always preferred to wait until I calmed down and then deal with it.

Second: I didn't punish Colin like that when he used the word either. No fair holding Evan to a different standard.

Third: I was a good deal younger when I used to word for the first time. But to be fair I had already used the word a few times before my parents actually caught me using the word.

You see, our house... It was fairly large. So depending on where we were, Brothers and I could get away with behavior unacceptable if we got caught.

But despite the size, the house it had a LOT of people living there. My brothers weren't an issue. (They tell on me I tell on them) No one liked a tattler! (Nor was Best-Friend an issue)

Grandfather and Grandmother lived in the East Quarter. Think of it as like a little apartment on the east end of the main house. My parents lived in the North Quarter. That was a similar set up in the middle of the main house.

Parents and Grandparents were the ones that we certainly had to watch our mouths in front of.

In the west quarter was Uncle and (because I don't know who else is reading, I'll just say) Uncle's Friend. We weren't concerned about watching behavior or language when with either of them.

They both seem to follow the principle of no tattling in regards to us. They certainly had permission to discipline us, (same as anyone else in the family) they were adults. But Uncle would never go there. He always said he was a rule breaker, not a ruler enforcer.

(He even had his own motorcycle gang. Well actually they were a group of guys from the lumber yard who just liked to ride motorcycles together on the weekends. We kids just thought they were a gang)

Also in the house was Mr K, (Usually) in the big downstairs kitchen. If it's something serious he might tell our parents, but foul mouths... we were safe.

Ms J, who took care of me and younger brother when Mother was not available. Then Mrs B, who typically took care of Older-Brother and Half-Brother when Mother was not available.

(You can guarantee we get a half cake of soap if we talk dirty in front of either of them. But only Ms J lived in the house.)

There were cleaning ladies from the lumber yard. When not down there, they were up at the house. But they rarely spoke to us. Some of them only spoke French.

And there's my best friend's mom who was up at the house usually to mend and modify Mother's dresses. (Or even just to hang out with mother)

Do I need to say that we had to watch our mouths in front of her?

So yeah we could get away with a lot of mischief, and Older-Brother was exceptionally good at getting away with it! However there were plenty of times when we simply got busted for being stupid!
